Cellar Wine
Will my wine definitely spoil if I don’t store it in a cellar or wine fridge?

I have about 15 bottles of wine that I’ve had for 1-3 years. Most of the time the bottles been stored under my bed on their side or in a closet. I’d say the temp stored has been mostly at room temp give or take 10 degrees according to the season.

Wine stored at ideal temperatures will go bad eventually. Most wine on the store shelves today is made to be consumed when it is purchased, not “aged” by the buyer. If you have wine that has been kept at a constant temperature, even room temperature, it may be the same as when you put it under your bed.

You know how to find out? Open the bottle. If it is drinkable, you will soon know. If you plan upon serving wine at a dinner party or to that “special friend,” I’d buy a fresh bottle, just in case…. grinnnnn.

There are very inexpensive wine coolers available today, that can be purchased at Best Buy, Target, Wal Mart, etc. If you plan upon keeping your wine at home for any length of time, I’d recommend keeping it at a constant temperature, somewhere around 60 degrees F for reds, and 45 degrees for whites and the ever popular Red Zin.

Regards,

Micallef – wine cellar
