Gifts Wine
What brand of wine should I give for an very special gift?

I would like to give my parents a nice bottle of wine for a gift. They are paying for my wedding and they are wine people so I want to get them something special that they would normally not buy for themselves. Maybe something around $100-$150/bottle? I would also like the brand to be something that people who are into wine will know about. Any suggestions? Red or White, it does not matter.

If you’re prepared to spend up to $150, and its a gift around a wedding, I’d get them a good Champagne. Everyone likes Champagne.

Wines (red or white) at that price point can be very complex wines that are really a matter of personal taste. I’m a wine person as well and I rarely buy Champagne for myself.

You can get a pretty good bottle of Champagne for $150. Buy a Premier Cru or Grand Cru from a label like Moet & Chandon, Veuve Cliquot, Taittinger, Bolinger, Pol Roger or Mumm. The last few years of Dom Perignon have been inconsistent. Personally, I like Krug and Lanson, but they’re less well known – though you can get a good bottle of Krug or Lanson for under $80.

Each label will have Champagnes much more expensive than you want to spend. Just look for Premiere Cru or Grand Cru in your price range and it’ll be fine.

The Very Best of Emmylou Harris: Heartaches and Highways

$5.98

Less than two years after the death of her mentor, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris recorded her first album for Reprise. Pieces of the Sky inaugurated a suite of four mid-’70s albums and a surprising number of hits: her sound was clearly traditional, but also tastefully up-to-date with folk-rock and singer/songwriter styles, and her crystalline, febrile vocals took standards such as “Love Hurts” and …

Many people have covered Bob Dylan’s songs over the years, but few quite like this. On the double-disc soundtrack that accompanies Todd Haynes’ extremely confounding biopic of the already plenty confounding folk icon, we get the likes of Sonic Youth, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, the Hold Steady, and Antony & The Johnsons doing their best Dylan impressions and often failing gloriously. Former Pavement f…
