Home Brewing And Wine Making

Wine making amateur. My first batch ready tonight. SG is 0.986. Is this OK? How do I calc the alcohol?
I have just attempted my first batch of home brew wine. I followed the instructions, but left out the clarifying solution unintentionally last week. I realised my mistake when I was about to bottle, corrected this and left it for another week. The SG is 0.986. Is this bad? How do I check the alcohol level? It tastes OK, smells a little vinegary. Any help would be appreciated, I thank you in advance (:))
Taste is the ultimate determinant of quality. The S.G. seems to me a little high but give it time wine is like that.
