Napa And Wine Tours

Need help planning out a Wine Tour for my girlfriend’s birthday.?
My girlfriends birthday is coming up in Jan. and I wanted to take her on a wine tour in the surrounding areas of San Fran. I’ve never been to Napa or any other wine tour locations as such. Ive heard of people taking limos to the wineries and there is also a train i believe. Any suggestions on transportation from SF to the wineries, which winery to visit for wine tasting and also where we should stay?
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATIED! THANKS IN ADVANCE.
I would suggest staying somewhere in Napa Valley–there are a lot of nice places and it all depends on your budget (Napa Valley is quite expensive but if you are going in Jan it will be a little cheaper since it’s the low season).
If money is no object stay at Auberge du Soilei or Meadowood. Both are ultra ritzy and exclusive.
If you are on a medium size budget try Villagio or Carneros Inn.
If you are on a tight budget Marriott Napa Valley is quite nice.
There is a wine train–it goes from Napa to Saint Helena and back. Here’s the web site (www.winetrain.com) they offer all sorts of different packages. It’s a nice experience and the food is really good.
You can take limos to the wineries, however I think it gets pretty expensive. My suggestion would be to drive yourselves.
Here are some good web sites for planning:
www.napavalley.com
www.napavalleyonline.com (site has a good winery map)
Be sure you map out a plan for each day, that way you are not doing a lot of unneccesary backtracking. Also, I would suggest not visiting more than 3-4 wineries a day—you want to make sure you are sober for dinner!
Here are my fave wineries:
Opus One (outstanding tour, you need to make reservations in advance)
Robert Mondavi (all around good for tours and tastings)
Joseph Phelps (amazing views, but no tours)
Pine Ridge (great for picnics, however it will be too cold in Jan)
Silverado (great views)
Rubicon (Coppolas place, very neat and they have cool movie stuff—good for tours)
Artesa–great views
Hess Collection—nice contemporary art collection of you like that sort of stuff
Domaine Chandon–to taste only, don’t go on the tour it’s boring
Silver Oak–one of best cabernets in my opinion
Here are my fave restaurants:
Terra in Saint Helena
Martini House in Saint Helena
Bouchon in Yountville
The restaurant at Auberge du Soilei
Mustards Grill in Yountville
Have fun and enjoy!
