Climate change likely put fizz into efforts to meet demand for more sparkling wines
French winemakers are coming to terms with the findings of new research into global warming which could mean that the regions which are able to grow the grapes which produce the country’s famous Champagnes could be in danger.
In fact, the recent research by Greenpeace, published in a report titled Impacts of Climate Change on Wine in France, suggests that parts of southern England could well be better suited to growing the grapes renowned for their fresh, light and zesty flavours.
And as the Champagne region itself continues to warm, the report suggests, the wines produced here are likely to become more sugary and full-bodied, giving rise to ‘Champagne’ possibly becoming a totally different drink to that which has previously been associated with the name. The report warns that French grape-growing is very sensitive to climate change. It adds that, if the current situation continues, specific types of vineyards might be displaced by up to 600 miles from their present boundaries by the end of the 21st century.
French champagne is dependent on the production of the Pinot Noir grape, and in areas where these are grown, the annual average temperature has increased significantly. Greenpeace says that, if this change continues at its present rate, the French notion of ‘terroir’, or the specific association between a type of wine and the area in which its grapes are grown, could mean long-standing practices and know-how are lost, as the conditions for growing the grapes worsen.
On the other hand, France’s loss could be Britain’s gain, as Greenpeace suggests that, if the six degrees rise in temperatures forecast for the French was repeated here, it would transplant the ideal growing climate to our own shores. The current crops of French Pinot Noir grapes are being harvested up to three weeks earlier than they were 40 years ago, which many commentators believe is resulting in far less characterful wines and champagnes.
The spread of more favourable wine-growing conditions is having similar impacts in the southern hemisphere, where champagne-style wines are now being produced far more widely. For purists this may be bad news. But for many people who simply enjoy a good quality sparkling wine made in a similar style to the great French Champagne houses, this is a development which will be welcomed.
