Wine storage question. How long for average quality reds?
I am in Australia. Great reds. Six to 7 years ago, the great majority of wines had statements like “best in five to seven years.” I have a large collection now of reds five to sometimes 10 years old. What is the probably of DECLINING quality after nine or ten years? Should medium quality wines last 12 to 15 years? Any experienced advice appreciated. Thank you.
Every wine is different.
A medium quality, high tannin, wine will age better than a high quality, low tannin one.
Alcohol content can also have an effect, the higher the alcohol the better it will age.
The best thing to do is go by the guidelines on the bottles, the makers know their wines better than anyone else.
Of course these guidelines only relate to wines stored in ideal conditions, cool and dark, exposing them to heat (and even worse large variations of heat) will greatly reduce the time they will stay at top quality.
